Electrical Enclosure for Ericsson (ODM)

Ericsson project

Electrical Enclosure 6345 is a RAN Support System, including a power, climate system, and external interfaces.

The Electrical Enclosure 6345 is a DC-fed (-48VDC) product for the global market with “high-end” requirements – the initial customer demand is in the Japanese market.

The Electrical Enclosure 6345 with the included climate and power systems is regarded as an ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) which means that Spring System is responsible for the entire system.

When delivering products to Ericsson Companies and Authorized Companies, Spring System shall comply with Ericsson’s requirements with regards to quality assurance as specified in Ericsson Supplier Quality Handbook.

The electrical enclosure is used within the Ericsson Radio System as a building block. It shall have a capacity of up to 200A for load and battery charging.

The enclosure is fed by AC and distributes a number of separately fused DC outputs. equipped with a battery interface in case of AC failure. The heat loads are Ericsson Remote radios, baseband, Transmission equipment, etc…

Challenge

The electrical enclosure should be designed for ETL approval with certification.

Commercially, the Enclosure dimensions and weight shall be defined by Spring System. Ericsson expects a better overall cost and also a good performance electrical enclosure.

Technically, Ericsson has a series of technical requirements:

Mechanical

The power and userspace compartment shall be sufficiently sealed from the battery compartment, preventing hydrogen gases from moving from the battery compartment to the equipment compartment.

Cables to/from the Power and userspace IP55 zone shall not interfere with battery handling.

The electrical enclosure shall operate with equipment in the configurable user space with integrated fans providing an air flow front-to-back, typically 60m3/h per U.

The enclosure shall operate with equipment in the configurable user space with integrated fans providing an airflow right-to-left / left-to-right, typically 40m3/h per U.

The electrical enclosure shall meet vandal resistance according to EN 1627 class RC1 or according to a similar local standard.

The Enclosure shall meet the requirement for impact resistance level IK10

The door shall be possible to lock in a position that allows the equipment to be extracted straight out from the cabinet.

Climate

The equipment compartment shall be cooled by closed-loop airflow, and the airflow inside the equipment compartment shall be separated from the ambient air by means of e.g. a heat exchanger (HEX).

The enclosure climate system shall maintain an air temperature in front of the configurable user space≤ +55°C, with equipment in the configurable user space.

In order to reduce the risk of fouling and clogging of the enclosure climate system, the minimum airflow direction cross-sectional dimension of any cooling airflow channel or opening shall be ≥2.3 mm.

The enclosures sound power (LWA) at 45°C ambient temperature shall be ≤65dBA

Performance, Functionality, and Communication

Spring system take responsibility for the power system functions.

The electrical enclosure includes a controller, it provides supervision and control of the power system. It is the Ericsson goal to be able to communicate with this controller using RS232, RS485 or Ethernet. It shall be possible to use one single interface for all management tasks including firmware upgrades.

The Ericsson communication will be on high level status and control with the purpose to integrate the power system into the Ericsson remote management system via the NB interface. The interface shall be backward compatible.

The electrical enclosure’s lifetime is required to be more than 15 years. MTBF at 35ºC ambient temperature for the Enclosure shall be calculated as more than 6000hours.

Solution

Spring system has a mature Product Development Process, which make use of well know project management tools for time, content, and quality delivery, e.g.:

  • Project Planning
  • Design Validation Planning
  • Project Risk assessment
  • Gate Reviewees Checklist
  • Lessons Learned Card
  • P- and d-FMEA cards

An excellent outdoor electrical enclosure is developed successfully, which passed all necessary testing, and meet Ericsson and their final Japanese customer’s satisfaction

Spring system has rich experience with Design Validation Planning as well as experience in cooperation with external laboratories for product validation. At our production site we are capable of performing the following tests:

  • Mechanical check
  • Mounting/dismantling check
  • Tolerance check
  • Paint test
  • Salt fog test
  • Impact test
  • IP / rain test
  • Lift test
  • Anti UV test
  • Other tests we are cooperating with worldwide accredited third party testing laboratories.
