What is a Thermoelectric Cooler?

Thermoelectric devices are thermoelectric modules that use Peltier Effect to create a heat flux between the junctions of two materials. The Peltier Effect is the temperature differential that is created when the DC power is applied across the two different materials.

A thermoelectric module is using two thin Ceramic Wafers when series of N and P semiconductor materials sandwich between them. Ceramic wafers add rigidity and provide necessary electrical insulation for the module.

The N type semiconductor have excess of electrons, while the P type have deficit of electrons. With one N and one P, make the junction couple to create the thermoelectric effect. When a DC current is applied to the circuit, the thermoelectric module can work as a cooler or heater.

a thermoelectric module is made up by two ceramic wafers and a series of N and P type semi-conductors

When a DC current is applied to the circuit, the thermoelectric module can work as a cooler or heater depending on the direction of current.

A thermoelectric cooler or TEC transfer heat from one side of the device to the opposite side against temperature gradient. The more semiconductor junction couples a TEC has, the greater it’s cooling effect. Also TEC provides a very simple and reliable solution for cooling devices.
